Perm

A perm is a chemical hair curling method.

With a perm, you can get permanent curls that make even thin hair airy and voluminous. With permed hair, the right home care products and habits are both extremely important in ensuring that the perm stays beautiful. Always make sure that you treat your permed hair according to your hairstylist’s instructions so that your curls will look as great as possible for as long as possible.

How does a perm work?

A perm is based on breaking the disulphide bonds in hair that make it straight or curly and reattaching them in their new form.

How long does a perm last?

The curl of a perm relaxes over time, but it can only be removed completely by growing it out or cutting off the permed parts of the hair.

How long do you have to wait after a perm to wash your hair?

You should wait 48 hours before washing your hair after a perm. You should not blow-dry your hair during this time, either, to prevent the curls from straightening out.

How can you remove a perm?

The only way to remove a perm is to grow it out or cut the hair off.

What is a straight perm?

The hair is combed straight while applying straightener, meaning that the hair is treated in the same way as for a regular perm, but without rollers/curling.

What is a spiral perm?

A spiral perm means rolling long hair in a spiral. A spiral perm is done by using very thin sections, twisting the strands into a spiral first and only rolling them around a roller after that.

Does a perm mean that can I get those amazing celebrity curls you always see in magazines and on social media?

Unfortunately not. Without exception, all those huge, beautiful clouds of curls in the photos have been created with different kinds of curling irons. None of them are permanent curls.

You do not perm long hair. Why not?

When long hair is permed, the desired end result and the actual end result do not usually match.

In nearly every case, people want to get large “celebrity curls” in long hair, and creating something like that with a perm is practically impossible. Long hair is heavy, and it can easily stretch big curls straight. In that case, it looks like no perm was done at all.

Often people are also under the illusion that a massive cloud of curls in long permed hair is easy to care for and needs no maintenance. Unfortunately, this is anything but the truth – long permed hair is an extremely challenging style to maintain.
